So you’ve decided to take the leap. Becoming a content creator is your calling and you’re ready to throw caution to the wind. You’re ready to start posting but there’s one question that keeps nagging at you… "what’s my style?" Here are some tips to get the ball rolling.
Identify your passions
Sounds simple enough right? But you’d be surprised to know how many people only know that they want to create content but not what they want to create. The things that you are most passionate about will usually be the easiest to create content for. It won’t feel like work if you’re sharing with others the things that drive you.
It’s this authenticity that people identify with. They can hear it in your voice. They can see it in your attention to detail. Others will recognize that passion and will be more inclined to follow your work. This is how you build a loyal following and community.
Learn from the best
Chances are you're not the first content creator in your field (if you are, more power to you!). However, don’t take this as a negative fact. This means you have countless other passionate creators to learn from.
Draw inspiration from your soon-to-be peers. There may even be certain aesthetics or trends that are popular in your field.
This is a good place to start as you develop your own style. Learn what current viewers are drawn to, and use that as a foundation as you sprinkle your own special spices into the mix.
Play to your strengths
This one is über important. Even as you learn from others, you’ve got things that you already do well. Your voice and your innate style is what will set you apart from the rest. Your quirky editing techniques? Your knack for the latest music trends? All important in making your content distinctly your own.
Take Casey Neistat for example. He’s known as the “godfather of vlogging” and inspired countless successful content creators. He’s known for his strong editing style and starting his videos with catchy songs and gorgeous timelapses of NYC. As you lean into the things you’re already good at, it gives you more leeway to focus on our next tip.
Experiment
This is where the magic happens. After identifying what viewers are drawn to, don’t be afraid to break the mold! There’s nothing more exciting than hearing something totally new in a song. Or being the first person to start a new trend.
There’s no surefire way for one to go viral, and that may not be your goal. But bringing something unique to a saturated field is the best way to stand out as a content creator.
Don’t be afraid to share
“Perfection is the enemy of progress” so don’t let the fear of something not being perfect stop you from putting your art out. Many musicians will tell you about hard drives full of “unfinished” ideas. Many amazing videos are left unseen on the editing floor.
It’s terrifying to be vulnerable and put a piece of ourselves out into the world for anyone to see. But with seven billion people out there, what are the chances you don’t connect with at least one?
Feedback is also crucial to development and you’ll never know if you’re on to something if you don’t put it out into the world.
